The Carnegie UK Trust works to improve the lives of people throughout the UK and Ireland, by changing minds through influencing policy, and by changing lives through innovative practice and partnership work. The Carnegie UK Trust was established by Scots-American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie in 1913.


Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland

In his Gospel of Wealth, published in 1889, Andrew Carnegie placed at the start of his list of  “best fields for Philanthropy”: universities, libraries and research institutes. It was therefore entirely consistent, when he realised his huge wealth by selling Carnegie Steel 1901, that his first major gift was to the universities of his homeland.  The Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland was established to aid the development of the Scottish universities – as both teaching and research establishments – and to pay the tuition fees of students attending these universities who, while suitably qualified, could otherwise not have afforded to enrol.  The Trust continues to support students and academic research in Scotland to this day.
